According to a report from The Verge, approximately one month ago, Avengers: Endgame lost to James Cameron’s Avatar. Fans of the blockbuster acknowledged that Cameron’s flick would likely remain the most successful movie of all time, at least commercially.
However, last night while at the San Diego Comic-Con, the Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, stated this was no longer the case. The Verge reported that Endgame will likely become the highest-earning movie all time either tomorrow or sometime later today.
At the moment, there is a small difference between Avatar and Endgame – around $500,000. Analysts state the gap will close between the two films in less than a day, which explains why Feige chose to make the announcement at Comic-Con.
Feige took the stage to thank the audience, stating, “thanks to you, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest film of all-time.” Reportedly, Disney and Marvel have been fighting for the number one spot for a while, which was formerly held by Cameron and the 20th Century Fox studio.
On the 28th of June, studios released a different version of Endgame to help draw more audiences, also adding formerly deleted scenes as well as a way to bring in more eyeballs. Around that time, Endgame was about $37 million away from topping Avatar.
Studios didn’t believe it was actually possible to get Endgame to beat Avatar, however, their re-releases helped earn that top spot. Reported by Deadline, the outlet stated that much of the $37 million came from overseas, however, there was a campaign to definitely make Avengers the highest earner of all time.
Even people on Reddit were creating campaigns and incentives in order to get more people to go out and buy another ticket to the movie. In other news, Disney has received praise from the financial community and even film analysts for their recent domination at the box office.
This past weekend was no different, as the Hollywood studio just released the CG photorealistic reboot of The Lion King, which is expected to continue its number one spot over the next few weeks.
